Star Wars Millennium Falcon Study Model

Millennium Falcon Study Model

The Millennium Falcon the ship of riddles as its called by some people, is clearly the most iconic ship in the Star Wars universe, loved by all and like the USS Enterprise from Star Trek a star in its own right, designed by Ralph McQuarrie, based on a hamburger with a pickle on its side (or so its said) and the mind of George Lucas  a few years ago I wanted to have a go and building it, this is in the not finished category or WIP section (work in progress).

I never finished it because I was moving from Ireland to Spain, it is one design I would like to return too someday.

This is as far as I got in the build, it’s a detail model and the thing about heavy detailed models is they take time to render and is heavy on PC resources i.e. RAM, so it could take time to render in an image or worse an animation. a lot of my model time is taken up with how to cut corners to reduce the all important polygon count.

Going back to the original artist concept Image, apart from a few changes I would like to have a go at designing his original concept design

Concept Design: Space Cargo Ship

Concept Design: Space Cargo Ship

I have used Lightwave for around 6 years, and I don´t consider myself an expert, perhaps well-informed would be better way to describe myself in this, there are a lot of great modellers I know and they have been very generous with their time, knowledge and skill. Some work in the film or TV, others are not working in it but they are as good and as quick to give advice, suggestions and above all help.( they are in my Blogroll area) VK08 and Mikala to name but two of the best modellers I know.

Sometime ago on one 3D forum http://www.3dgladiators.com/ (now closed) we held a design contest, to build a cargo ship or anything that is connected with cargo, this design was my submission for it. (I did not win but the one that did was well deserved).

but it was liked it a lot, and some members who have complemented on it, which is always great and a reward in itself for a modeller or designer.

(I think I can call myself a designer now).

Alas I lost this model in a PC crash before I could finish it, but it’s not the end of the design. As I am coming to the end of a (year-long) project, which is my first training manual for building a model in lightwave which is the USS Enterprise from the original TV show 1960s and it’s aimed at new modeller using Lightwave.

But more on that later. I will be returning to this design and rework it for an other exciting project with my cgi partner by the name of Dan Baran aka Fretslayer, there will be more on that in the future.
